Anthony Powell Obituary

Anthony Earl Powell was born February 22, 1957 to the late Earl and Macie Powell in Jersey City, New Jersey. He was called to rest on Friday June 17, 2022 at the Christiana Care Center for Heart and Vascular Health in Newark, Delaware.
Known to friends and family as Tony, Anthony Powell, was born in Buffalo, New York and raised in Jersey City. He attended public school in Jersey City and graduated from St. Peter's Prep High School in 1975. He attended the Higher Achievement Program at St. Peter's Prep before finishing elementary school, where he was recognized as a class leader. He went on to graduate from St. Peter's, where he was a founding member of the Ebony Club, a student organization that established a scholarship fund for incoming freshmen that continues to this day.
From a very early age Tony was a devoted member and active participant at Salem Baptist Church in Jersey City.
When Tony was young his Godmother gave him a portable record player. That gift sparked his love for music as he would often listen to his Mother's records. He was also influenced by his Mother's skill as a pianist and choir vocalist. Tony studied piano, clarinet, trumpet and saxophone. He loved all kinds of music, especially R&B and Jazz.
During his college years Tony parlayed his knowledge of music into a role as an on-air personality on WQHS a campus radio station.  Later, he created an internship at a commercial radio station in Philadelphia where he worked in the news department.
Tony began writing about R&B music in 2009. From 2011 until 2014 he published a blog called Clef Notes Music Magazine. Tony managed the Facebook pages The Music Griot and Fans of Rachelle Ferrell and Will Downing.
Tony is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia where he earned a Bachelor's degree in English in 1979. While at Penn he became a life-long member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc, the nation's oldest historically African American fraternity, where Tony was known affectionately and respectfully as Alpha T.
Tony also has done graduate work in Educational Leadership and Educational Technology. In 2019 he earned certifications in Fundamentals of Social Media Marketing, and advanced Social Media Marketing for Business from the Professional and Continuing Studies School at the University of Delaware.
For many years Tony taught English at his former high school St. Peter's Prep, and at the New Castle County Vocational Technical School District in Wilmington.
After retiring from teaching, most recently Tony worked in the home improvement retail industry, where he became a valued and respected team member at Home Depot and Lowe's.
Remaining in this life to cherish Tony's memory are his loving wife Tisha, beloved sister Lydia, daughters Malissa and Aketa, son Wayne, and grandchildren Aubrey and Anisa, and countless relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his mother, father and sisters Pamela and Susan.
