On September 5, 2022, Doris Biles transitioned from this life and went on to be with God. Doris was born on February 18, 1943, to the late Roper Biles Sr. and Sarah Biles in Wadesboro, North Carolina. She was affectionately known as Yogi and Co to her oldest friends and family. Doris received her education in Anson County, NC, Greensboro, NC, and Dumbar High School in Baltimore, Maryland. Doris began her walk with God at a young age under the leadership of Rev. Butler. She later joined Friendship Baptist Church in Lewes, DE under the leadership of Rev. Carter, and remained a faithful member under Rev. Edwards until she was called home.
Doris held many jobs over the years. She worked at Doxsee’s Clam Factory (Lewes, DE), Anson County Sheriff’s Department (Wadesboro, NC), Commodore Hotel (Rehoboth, DE), and Breakers Motel (Rehoboth, DE). She also worked as both a school bus aide and school bus driver for Cape Henlopen School District while being a foster parent.
Doris loved to spend time with her friends and family as she was very family oriented. She did her best to make sure her family was well taken care of. She enjoyed playing pinochle with anyone that still knew how to play and going to the casino. Doris also enjoyed watching tv and movies with her loved ones. She was a humanitarian at heart. She and her sister, Mary, started the after school and summer program in West Rehoboth. In her later years, she made sure to make it to field day at Rehoboth Elementary School to cheer on all of the kids and bring fried chicken to Mr. Maull and watermelon and juices for everyone else. She also received the NAACP Unsung Hero Award in 2019 showing that her contributions did not go unnoticed or unappreciated. She was Gran to everyone, regardless of blood. Doris Biles was truly a pillar of her community and will be missed dearly.
Doris was preceded in death by her four brothers, Roper Biles Jr. (Betty), Theodore Biles (Lucy), Robert Biles (May), Parnell Biles, and her sister, Mary Biles-Sturdivant (Donald).
Doris leaves to mourn: her three children - Judge Smith (Judy), Sarah Smith, and Cammy Dean (Corrie); one sister - Lessie Rasheed; one brother - Sandy Biles Sr. (Rosa); one sister in law - Marjorie Biles; six grandchildren - Nelson Smith Sr. (Angela), Arron Smith, Ceritta Biles-Brisco (Orlando), Mozella Matthews, C’eyra Middleton, and Lashonda Boyer; 18 great-grandchildren - Nelson Jr., Nadir, Karma, Kamille, Mekhi, Nakiyzha, Aryéon, Hylea, Ny’Ashja, Ta’Mara, Harmoni, Orlando, Nizer, Prisaja, Mykheria, Jaylynn, Jocelyn, Isaira, and Iyainia; four great-great-grandchildren - Aasir, Prizaila, Azarae, and Myles; five god-daughters - Wanda Lisenby, Kennesha Harrington, Kizzie Lisenby, and Jamie Deberry; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
