One autumn day, September 10, 1950, to be exact in Magnolia, Mississippi Ellen Numery Williams and Alphfane Williams was blessed with another baby girl their eighth child Merrell Joeann Williams.
This beautiful baby girl Merrell embodied a radiant beam of life which cultivated a loving, nurturing, and caring personality that we have grown to love and cherish. Growing up in Mississippi was anything but easy but through the grace of God she would fulfill her purpose.
In her mid-teens Merrell’s older sisters invited her to move to New York City and join them. Excited to go to the Big Apple Merrell made the transition from a country girl to a city girl. Merrell’s adjustment to the Big Apple was effortless she was styled from head to toe earning her the nickname “Cinderella”, but she truly had what it took to where the glass slippers.
After graduating from Andrew Jackson High School in Queens, New York Merrell gained employment at the local dining. While working in the diner she met her daughter’s father Victor Smith. According to Merrell, Victor had told her that his dad had died, and she felt sorry for him, so she went on a date. And from there the began a family. Merrell Confident, determined, strong-willed were at the forefront of Merrell characteristic. Along with her love of red lipstick, nail polish, lace, shoulder pads, and a Chinese fan she would leave the imprint of her glass slipper in everyone’s lives.
Merrell’s legacy is strong and will continue to be honored by her only child, Netfisha Smith Martin; three granddaughters, Niedeara Williams; Nadaya Williams; Nefretiri Williams. two grandsons, Navonte Williams, Namel Martin; four great grandsons, Nasir Williams Martin; Namari Williams; Naveen Williams; and Sekani Bryant. One sister, Vern Williams; one brother, Aubrey Williams; her son- in- law, Sean Haynes; and ex son- in- law, Paul Martin. And host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends along with ample magnitude of love and memories.”
