Phyllis Celinda Miller Berry Scott, daughter of the late Rodney and Clara Miller was born on June 1st, 1934, in Dover, Delaware. On Sunday morning, December 31st, 2023, at Bayhealth Hospital Kent Campus, she left it all behind and gently departed her life after 89 lovely years on this earth.
Phyllis was educated at Caesar Rodney, Booker T. Washington, Delaware State College High School, and Delaware Technical Community College. She obtained her bachelor's degree in business from Delaware State College (currently known as Delaware State University). She was employed for thirty-three years with several companies. She was employed by Dover Air Force Base, National Cup Co., University of Delaware, and retired from Delaware State University as a security officer. After retirement, she decided to continue to work and was employed by Whatcoat Shelter until she fully entered retirement. While she was employed, she was an active union member of AFCME council eighteen.
Phyllis joined Union Baptist Church in March of 1950 under the leadership of Rev. J.H. Williams and remained a member of Union Baptist attending regularly until she departed this earth. She served on the choir, usher board, women’s committee, culinary committee, and pastor’s aide.
She was a dedicated member of Hattie S. Blackwell Chapter #16 and actively participated until her health declined. Phyllis was the light and love of her family and despite having a large family, she was always available for everyone. She constantly provided love and support for her family and friends. She enjoyed family gatherings at her house or family members’ homes. Phyllis had a love of all thing’s turtles. She has a huge collection of turtle figurines, plates, pictures, jewelry, and blankets all with turtles she has personally collected, and family and friends have gifted her over the years. She loved cooking, sewing, and baking, especially her famous bean pie and yeast rolls. In her earlier years she enjoyed making wedding cakes for family and friends. She loved going on vacation with her son Greg and daughter in love Brenda on the land, sea, and air. She also loved her visits to the casinos. She loved to attend family reunions and family BBQs whether they were in Dover, DE, North Carolina, or South Carolina. She took pride in the summer months to have all her grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews at her home to spoil them with trips to the beach, McDonalds, and Dairy Queen. She enjoyed it when her grandson Robert and great granddaughter Nakira would stop by weekly to check on her. She also looked forward to her nephew Les Berry stopping in. She especially loved all her little great grandchildren stopping by and she would be sure to have popsicles and crackers ready for them to snack on. One thing about Phyllis, she would enjoy a phone call from her family and friends especially niece Nancy Lewis and friends Donnie Bryant, Christine Spady, Pearl Sherman, and the late Claretta Freeman.
In addition to her parents, Phyllis was proceeded in death by her husband Joseph S. Berry Sr., her sons Jarrell L. Berry and Edwin V. Berry and three brothers Donald V. Miller, Aaron L. Miller, and Walden B. Miller. She leaves to cherish her memories five children, Joseph S. Berry Jr. (Brooklyn, NY), Jacqueline D. Berry (Charlotte, NC), Jeraldine D. Berry (Dover, DE), Walden “Greg” Berry (Brenda) Dover, DE, Desiree Berry (Dover, DE); two sisters-in-law Jean Berry (Wilmington, DE) and Elizabeth Mitchell (Dover, DE); a cousin who was raised like a sister Lois Beecher (Dover, DE); 15 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren; two Godchildren Jamal and Kasim Washington (Georgia); special friends Pearl Sherman, Christine Spady, Donnie Bryant and Alice Crump. A host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and Union Baptist church family far too numerous to list.
